Defined as a two-headed band sustaining a constant balance between its two voices (that of Amaia Tirapu and that of Iñaki López), the Pamplona group honours the painter whose surname they borrowed by offering a peculiar dripping of pungent and expressionist pop that accommodates everything from the shock doctrine of Naomi Klein, to the charms of provincial indie, to feminist paradox and the corruption of university master’s degrees. Their brazen irony and the lyricism of their compositions replicate the arty sound of The Modern Lovers in a state of grace, pumping blood into the corpse of 90s noise psych, with a rebellious spirit and a subtle tinge of garage. With more than ten years going strong and several albums released, Kokoshca has burgeoned with each new one, turning up their sharp, acidic gaze with intricate neo-psychedelic dynamics that border on the conjunctural and unbelieving rhythm and blues of the likes of Dr. Dog and The Deadly Snakes. #psychedelia
