Bedroom pop fever harbors a trap: you can end up disguising your manifest inability to write good songs with the excuse that they are just DIY productions, remaining an admired underground figure, with critics and audiences swallowing it. The bad part comes when, over time, your lo-fi grift is exposed by your poor songwriting. The case of Paco Moreno is far from this reality, distorted by the prevailing fashion, as his informal intimacy is not so much a generational symptom as it is a statement. Hard to pin down, due to a veritable torrent of singles and EPs, the Andalusian now has two full albums short on minutes but rich in emotional depth (Rumba Deluxe and Rumba o nada, both released this year), works in which this casual bard is able to switch between genres like the bolero, reggae and Peruvian cumbia and chicha. Like a post-lockdown Kiko Veneno. #rumba
